Can the certificate be issued to a legal entity (company, organisation, territorial community etc.)?

Currently, in most European countries, certificates are issued exclusively to individual people within the context of their position within a company, an organisation or a territorial community. These people act in the name of and on behalf of the legal entity which they represent.

Who to choose as holder of the certificates?

The holder must be the person who uses the certificate within the company. According to the use and the internal organizational model of the company, several people may be equipped with an electronic certificate.

Most electronic certificates have equal parity with handwritten signatures (confirm with your provider). The holder is under contractual obligation to preserve his signature (and thus its certificate) under his exclusive control. He is the only person authorised for the use of his certificate.

Where to store certificates?

It is possible to store the certificates on different devices:

Internal device:

  • The certificate is stored on the hard drive of your computer.

External devices:

  • Smartcard - the certificate is on a smartcard equipped with a specific module for the lodging of the certificates (cryptographic module).
  • USB Key - the certificate is stored on a USB key equipped with a specific module for the lodging of the certificates (cryptographic module).

What is the duration of a certificate?

A certificate has a limited duration. This duration is published on the certificate.

Can I use several certificates?

At the moment, a number of applications (e-government, e-banking, etc.) are not open to all kinds of certificates and require you to use a pre-determined type of certificate. This often obliges you to use different certificates. It is possible to use as many certificates as you need.

How can I revoke certificate?

The revocation of a certificate is similar to canceilling a credit card when is has been comprised or lost.. The certificate changes status;, it passes from valid to revoked.

To revoke a certificate, contact your certificate provider.

Who can revoke a certificate?

The revocation of the certificate can be requested by three parties:

  • The legal representative
  • The agent of certification
  • The holder
